Dear Sendelta Community,

From time to time, I will invite different representatives from our faculty to share their thoughts with you to give you a variety of perspectives about what’s happening at school. This week I’ve invited Mr. Marko Stupar, the head of our Visual & Performing Arts Department, to share some thoughts about our visual arts and music programs.

Tremayne GibsonVice Principal of Academic Affairs

(From Marko)

Greetings Sendelta Community!

Let me begin with a few words of encouragement for our young artists and musicians. The beginning of each semester is always the hardest part for both teachers and students. This is especially true for art and music courses which focus heavily on the development of ideas and public performance. To do well, both require a lot of time, energy, and focus.

Artists (both in music and visual arts) are always pushing the boundaries of creativity and inventing new experiences as they enter into the unknown. The creative process is messy and sometimes frustrating as new ideas transition from a state of chaos to order. Yet for both professional artists with years of experience and for students new to the discipline, the process gets easier and easier with time and practice. A few sloppy lines on paper can be the precursor to a masterful sketch. A couple of tones in a melody can grow into a beautiful song.

That is generally how this month’s visual art and music courses have been progressing. More specifically, students have already finished their first assignments with great success, teachers are very satisfied, and they are showing a lot of interest for upcoming topics and projects. But they have just scratched the surface of what is possible, and I am expecting more and more accomplishments every week.

In the visual art courses, Stojan, Chloe, and I are now focusing on drilling students in how to properly use lines, shapes, space, texture, color and other principles of art. These foundational skills will gradually grow more complex as students engage in ever more challenging projects.

The three of us are also collaborating to support students during ECA time by administering a new program informally known as the Open Art Studio. We hope students with varying skill levels and interests can come together in one of our art studios to share ideas and seek inspiration from their peers. We teachers will play a supporting role, making ourselves available to give constructive feedback and recommendations for resources that can be helpful to them. There are already many good books in the library that students will use during the course of their art ECA programs. Our goal is to provide a careful balance of structure, resources, and freedom to maximize student creativity.

Our music teachers Marija and Kay are developing our young musicians into disciplined and confident performers. In choir, students who started with lots of stage fright have finally begun to relax. The different groups are learning to sing in unison and those walking by their classrooms are stopping for a few seconds to enjoy listening to their heart-warming melodies. Our orchestra students are building on their work from last semester and are already having rehearsals that sound complete and rich in tone. Our goal is to soon launch regular off-campus performances to give the world beyond our campus walls the chance to see and hear the lively performances they’re preparing.

The entire VPA staff are very pleased with the level of talent and commitment we’re seeing in this year’s students. We are confident many impressive performances and exhibitions are ahead of us.

Thank you for your interest and support.
